The Start of a Doll Collection
I loved Cabbage Patch Dolls, Strawberry Shortcake and Barbie when I was young. During the eighties, my Mom and other relatives would spend hours waiting for them to go on sale at local stores. I always ended up getting one of my favorites when Christmas arrived. Some of these dolls have gone on to be collector's items.
I also remember hearing about all the fights in the stores that the mothers, aunts and grandmothers would get into at the stores, trying to get that perfect doll for the special girl in their life. I was fortunate that nothing so dramatic happened during the purchase of my gifts. Some people did lose perspective however in their quest to get the doll their child wanted.
I think one of the things that made these dolls fun to play with was all the accessories. I would play with my dolls for hours. I still have one of the cabbage dolls and the strawberry shortcake doll. You can still smell the strawberry scent on the strawberry shortcake doll. I have them in my curio cabinet now. My 4 yr old daughter enjoys looking at them. When she gets older(much older) I am going to pass them on to her.
I was also quite fond of my Barbie dolls during my childhood. My auntie had given me a Bubble Cut Barbie that was especially precious to me. I took it on many adventures. Playing with the many varied Barbie accessories was always tons of fun for me. Barbie's hair always fascinated me and I created many new styles for her.
My uncle built me a special Barbie house that I used constantly. I think that Barbie is one of the most enduring and well loved dolls for girls because you can give her so many different looks and do so many things with her. I was proud of the fact that I never damaged any of my dolls. They were all well kept.
Many celebrities have Barbie dolls created to look like them as well. Barbie was a great gift and it is a great collector's item. I have several Barbies that are in great kept condition as well. Some babies can be sold on EBay to make a profit if they are in good enough condition. For now, I will continue to enjoy my Barbies and pass them down in the family eventually.
Back in the 80's, the cabbage patch doll was also a big hit. I had to have one. So my collection of the cabbage patch doll began. I started out with a cabbage patch with blond hair. I then received the premie cabbage patch doll. I wanted an African American one too, so a year later for Christmas I got one of those as a gift too. I loved going over to my friends house and playing with them.
Although some doll collections can be worth a lot of money, I collect for the fun of it. My memories of times spent playing with and collecting my dolls are strong and I enjoy them quite a bit. I hope as my children grow, I will be able to pass this love and appreciation of dolls on to them. Doll collecting is a wonderful hobby for anyone.
